Two comments:
1. Your buddy on that dive has a history of diving behavior not dissimilar to what you experienced and has even taken a "deserved" DCS hit. Find another buddy.
2. In 600+ dives, I have TRIED to donate air twice, both times it was refused by the person who needed it. In one instance, the person was too panicked and simply surfaced well before when he should have, with no air. In the other instance, the diver managed to fix his regulator problem underwater, but probably should have taken mine while he worked on it. In both cases I was struck by their refusal to accept help.
