You have a lot of good boats out of that area. Check out www.californiadiveboats.com for the Spectre, Peace Liberty and a number of other boats based there. Try to get to the outer islands if you can. It may be more lush.
You might want to check out www.diver.net/seahunt for some more info on California diving... It's the best in the world.
