Ken I realize that you have no cave training nor do you cave dive so I thought I'd clear something up for you..

You wrote Did he at least have a reel and line - which I would think would have led rescuers right to him? Not clear, at least to me, from the account

The account of the story wrote: The mainline was also entangled around his neck..

The mainline is a line used in cave diving that the surveyors lay when mapping the cave. Diver's use this line as the *main* line, hence the name.. That is the line you follow in and out, but to the extent that you desire to *jump* off the mainline you would use a *gap* reel or a *jump* reel that you would tie off from the mainline...

Given that they found the body tangled in the mainline it is VERY unlikely that he would have had any of his reels out.. The rescuers would have followed the mainline and then simply ran into him..

It seems pretty clear to me...
