I once watched a salesman at a large chain store sell a guy my size (about 5'8") an "extra long" zero degree rated bag (for someone over 6'6") because it had more filling than the appropriate sized bag, and thus was "warmer". At first I was astonished at this brazen lie, a shameless attempt to sell someone something more expensive. However, after watching a bit longer (and making a short statement to the individual in question), I realized the moron just didn't know any better. Take your pick, either or both is probably true in this case. In your case the mistake is relatively harmless. Having had several experiences with hypothermia (and a few rather scary rescues), my case was a serious safety issue.

Salespersons in those large chain stores no nothing. It's like asking the fry man at McDonalds how to cook gourmet...
