As a diver who tested wetsuits and drysuits for several manufacturers, I can say that I have never been cold while diving in a wetsuit. BUT, I had never been warm underwater until I wore a drysuit.
Both suits have their place. It is silly and a sales pitch to tell someone that wetsuits are only for free diving or surfing. I agree that a diver's body type must be taken into consideration. 5'10" and 125 pounds will freeze in a matter of minutes. A custom wetsuit with spine pad and all the other add-ons may not be the best direction to go.
I also believe that a drysuit is NOT a piece of equiptment for the beginning diver. The neophyte diver is not accustomed to the buoyancy issues that can occur with a drysuit and wooly undergarments.
