Nope... it's just that we're so starved for a real squid run (and some of us have never experienced one to know the difference) that a mini-run is heralded as the almighty squid run.

In truth, unless you're in wall to wall squid the entire dive and the bottom of the ocean is solid white from squid egg sacs everywhere you go, then it's not really a 'real' squid run.

Haven't had one of those since 96/97 (true in LJ Canyon, think-but-not-100%-sure also true in Redondo Canyon).

This timing is coincident with a MASSIVE rise in take by the squid fishery.

And, yes, given the squid lifespan, a year or two or seven or so (in this case) can make a huge difference.
