Snorkels are for snorkeling, regs for scuba. Reg off the boat, leave the snorkel for snorkeling. Exceptions, of course, i.e., long surface kick to dive site; only time I'd dive with both reg and snorkel. Or in the tropics with 100 fsw viz. Save the air for areas you want to dive on. But I'd always giant stride off a boat reg in mouth the way Seahunt does.
