In that case, I'd chalk it up to experience and stick with the buddies who are known quantities.

Diving is a gear-intensive sport and it's inevitable that stuff breaks/gets lost from time to time. No one likes replacing equipment, but stressing out about it (no matter how it happened or who's fault it was) diminishes from the fun of the sport.
