you asked why an instructor would kneel on the bottom, and my answer is to show the students what he/she wants them to do. While this may not be a proper practice for an experienced diver, though there are always exceptions, students are forced to do it this way in a pool, so for the first couple of dives, do it the way you practiced it, and the instructor should do it the same way as students, to reduce confusion. A good instructor, like the ones I had, explain what they are doing and why, and incourage their students to learn more and sometimes better ways of doing things. Occasionaly, for stability, I'll find a clear patch of sand away from the dive site, and kneel while making an adjustment to some peice of equipment. Too bad it's not a perfect world. Of course if it were, it would probably be boring.
