Gloves 5mm vs 3mm

I lost my gloves last weekend and before I will head over to the shop to buy a new pair, I would like to ask you people for opinions. Mine old ones were 3mm and I never had problems manipulating stuff underwater with them, but I defintely felt my fingers getting numb cold on 50F dives. Are 5mm gloves a significant improvement when it comes to retaining heat? Do they significantly affect manual abilities under water?
